Things To Know About This Blog

  • This is almost entirely an exercise just for myself.  For years I was writing stuff regularly, starting with MTBing articles, gear reviews, race reports, etc on Singletracks (my stuff can be found here) and then on the site for my custom bicycle wheel building business (Southern Wheelworks - the site is gone now).  I kinda miss it, hence this.  No idea how long I'll keep this up.
  • Any measurements on the site, including weights, are real actual measurements I took myself.  Don't trust manufacturer dimensions, they are often wrong!  
  • Everything posted here I purchased myself with my own money.
  • As an engineer I'm a stickler for being technically accurate.  If I make a mistake, my bad, let me know and I'll correct it.
  • Any opinions posted are my own, based on my own personal preferences and viewpoints.  You may disagree and rightly so based on your own preferences.  But that doesn't make me wrong.
  • I will try and post something once a week, Mondays at 9am eastern time.

Watch Review: Citizen Promaster Land PMD56-2952

Promaster is Citizen’s higher end line of sport watches, and is broken up into Land, Sea, and Sky groups.  This is part of the Land group and is a JDM watch - meaning Japanese Domestic Market, AKA it's only sold in Japan.  Of course thanks to the internet you can buy it anywhere in the world...but you can't go to your nearest dealer and look at one unless you live in Japan.   This is the first ‘nice’ watch I bought myself, I’ve had it for a year and a half now.  Long story short, my interest in watches went from ‘lets try it’ with a cheap Timex, to a Citizen BM8180, then to this Promaster Land.  I liked the size and style of the BM8180, but the mineral crystal and very basic movement left something to be desired after learning more about watches. Knife Review: Takamura R2 180mm Gyuto

Let me start with a disclaimer - this is my first Japanese knife.  I am far from an expert.  There is much I don't know.  I honestly don't know much about Takamura, but I do know it's a family business and the man who runs the company now, Terukazu Takamura, is the third generation of the Takamura family to be a blacksmith. I also know, they make crazy awesome knives.  I had never heard of them until I got a recommendation on the ChefKnives sub-reddit. Lets get the stats out of the way, then we'll dive into it. Watch Review: Casio Ocenaus T200

Oceanus is a high end line of sporty/dressy watches from Casio that is only sold in Japan.  This is the second Oceanus model I've owned, and I've had it for about six months now.  It has, in my opinion, the most quality and excellence per dollar of any watch at any price point.  Bottom line - if you like the styling, get it, it's amazing.  There's a few little issues, but it's mostly great.
